August 2012 Meeting: Protective Finishes

Shirley and Lee Ann are sharing the demo on protective finishes for your works of art.

Shirley is our fantastic president who does beautiful work in polymer clay. Lee Ann has had her work shown in Polymer Cafe and is our vice-president.

Finishing Techniques for Polymer Clay

Sanding and Buffing: We’ll have a short demo covering sanding techniques, followed by buffing options. Tools and equipment will be available for you to examine and try out.

If you’re interested in trying this finishing method, here’s what to bring:

  • One flat-surfaced, already baked clay piece to practice on
  • A lump of scrap clay 2” in diameter or larger -big enough to support your piece comfortably off the table while buffing with a hand-held machine buffing tool

We’ll show finished pieces with different liquid, paste and a couple of resin applications.

If you would like to try any of these bring:

  • Baby wipes
  • Paper towles
  • Paint brush ( 1/4 or 1/2 inch)
  • Sharpie ( to lable baked squares)
  • 6 squares of baked scrap clay about 2x2 ( to test the different finishes)

August Swap: The theme for the August guild swap is “Dog Days”.

The meeting will be August 11, 2012; 1:30pm to 4:30pm in the City Arts Center at 3000 General Pershing Blvd on the fair grounds, use the May street entrance, in Studio 2 .
